Finding the Gift: Part 1

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change."James 1:17

And His gifts are good and perfect and He gives them freely and bountifully. And He gives them to you and to me and to the broken person down the street and to the drug addict passed out in the woods and the workaholic glued to her desk and to the very best and the very worst among us.

And His gifts are good and they are free and they are bountiful. Yet when I see the lost and broken and the sinner getting the same bountiful love that I am receiving, I think that the gift must be something else, because why would they receive the gift… And I forget that I am a broken saint…that I am a sinner restored…that I am a lost child of the King who is lost no more.

Because the gifts aren’t in the big or the glamorous… They are in the small, the daily, the normal things...

The gift is the sunshine and the rain, in the grass growing sweet and green and the leaves slowly withering into the brilliant shades of fall. The gift is breath in my lungs and the beating of my heart and my eyes to see the beauty God created in the world around us.

But maybe the smallness makes them all the more precious. And maybe the sheer quantity makes them all the more a treasure to notice. And maybe the incomparable quality makes them completely priceless.

And sometimes, He does work in the big and the seemingly impossible. But just maybe those are the exception, not the rule. And when He does work that way, if I've been enjoying and thanking for the daily gifts He gives, then I'll be overwhelmed in Him. Overwhelmed by Him. Overwhelmed by His goodness.

“A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven." John 3:27

Not even one thing. Not the hair on my head Not the breath in my lungs Not the food in my fridge Not the afternoon sunshine pouring through our giant living room window. Not even one thing...

And if that doesn't make me thankful, then I wonder what will.
