Outshine the Dark

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."John 1:5

We were driving together late one night last week and I tried to put it into words, how I think the light is one of my favorite parts of the Christmas season: the twinkling tree, the lights strung up all over, and the candles fluttering around the house. It’s so beautiful; it’s breathtaking.

It’s was little funny to me at first, how a holiday in the middle of the darkest part of the year is associated with light. But then I realized, maybe that’s the point of the season.

Because you can’t see the beauty of and need for light unless there’s darkness. And the blacker darkness, the brighter the light shines.

I’ve spent so many hours trapped down in fear of my own darkness. Afraid of myself. Afraid of what I might do. Afraid of mistakes I might make. Afraid of mistakes I have made.

And I read this verse and suddenly saw it...

My dark heart of sin cannot block out God's light shining my heart.

What comfort. His light can outshine my darkness, and my darkness will never overcome His light.

The Light of the world burst into the darkness of our black and broken world to banish the dark, to wash it away and free us from it. And darkness cannot block out light.

More importantly, the darkness of my sin cannot block out the Light of the world who is in me. And I'm so thankful. That is what I want all those beautiful, twinkly lights at Christmas time to remind me of.

Be blessed <3
